Discipline is a major requirement for every believer, in fact what we believe or say is always put under the test of Discipline.
Discipline is the virtue that allows a person to exercise self-control, which is a fruit of the spirit, and is a subject of the Bible.
The Hebrew word for Discipline is “mūṣār” which is translated paideia in New Testament Greek,
meaning “chastisement” or “instruction” Hebrews 12:5, 7, 8, 11, Ephesians 6:4; 2
“We may feel God’s hand as a Father upon us when He strikes us as well as when He strokes us.” Abraham Wright
4 Steps to Becoming Disciplined Explored
The path of faith requires commitment, work, and discipline; it is not a leisurely stroll.
Since spiritual development and growth are not automatic processes, discipline is necessary.
In this article, we will explore 4 steps of becoming disciplined in our walk with God and how it contributes to a balanced and strong faith.
1. START SIMPLE BUT MAKE A COMMITMENT
Discipline as a believer demands that even if you are starting little, you have to make an intentional commitment to it.
For example you can start with the Discipline of reading 3 chapters of the Bible daily and then maintaining consistency in your prayer time.
For one thing, the power is in the consistency and continuity because that’s what can draw the Spirit of God.
After this becomes second nature to you, you can start doing additional disciplines on a more frequent basis.
Lastly, developing healthy spiritual practices takes time. Start off small and make a commitment to finish.
2. BE ACCOUNTABLE
In growing Discipline, having someone to help keep you on track, push you toward your goal and insisting on you can be immensely helpful.
In fact, the effectiveness of a believer is measured by the level of his accountability whether to Christ, His Body or an authority.
Besides, you need to have someone with the right to speak truth into your life as you set out on this journey.
So, accountability is one of the mechanics in the Body that help you consciously build lasting spiritual Discipline.
3. PRACTICE NEW THINGS
Have you ever tried any Discipline before? Is it Bible study? Fasting ?.
Prior to deciding whether or not a specific spiritual discipline is beneficial.
As a result, investigate a little bit and give it a try as the Spirit guides you.
It’s possible that God uses it heavily in your life.
Attempting a new spiritual discipline can be exhilarating; let the Holy Ghost assist you.
4. MAKE ROOM BY LETTING GO OF SOMETHING
As a believer, Discipline demands that you let go of some legitimate things so that you can be more effective.
I’m so busy, I just don’t have time to sit down and study my Bible, I think it’s not my thing.
Although it’s simple to say, this is only an excuse.
Undoubtedly, we all have a busy schedule, but we still need to set aside 10 to 15 minutes each day for Disciplined activities.
Moreover, it has dawned on me that justifications are never insufficient—as long as one desires to offer them.
Therefore, in order to be a believer, you must give up of things, even if they are reasonable, like relaxation or sleep.
Lastly, be honest, commit to giving it up, and attempt giving up whatever it may be for you.
Conclusion
Discipline makes for effectiveness in ones walk with God.
Hence, in becoming Disciplined you must make a commitment to be consistent,
You must be accountable to someone and always make room to let some things go.
Albeit, not everything is God’s discipline or the protocol of discipline trying to work in us.
Don’t be so quick to assume that you are being disciplined for every little thing, it could be your carelessness.
May God help us to embody the discipline it takes to steward what He has committed into our hands. IJN
