Financial wisdom is extremely important in the daily life of a believer.
Although we may appear to be doing well at times, there is no God-given insight when it comes to our money.
For this reason, it appears that financial wisdom is a vital component of Christian living.
Furthermore, prudent money management is crucial for Christians, both in terms of practical applications and biblical principles.
Lastly, as a believer you must understand that you are a steward and your finances are part of what you will give account for.
1st Corinthians 4:2 “Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful”
7 Financial Wisdom Explored
There are three main reasons why God desires that you own wealth: to nourish your own family, to conquer the world, and to finance God’s kingdom.
Furthermore, you still need to be provided for in terms of food, clothing, and shelter, even if all you want to do is evangelise.
You still require funds! So you are to handle money with honesty, discernment, and charity as stewards of God’s resources.
In this article, we will explore seven financial wisdom every believer should embrace to honour God with their finances.
1. Your Only Source Is God

Among the most important and vital financial wisdom you need to possess is the understanding that God is your only source.
“And my God, through Christ Jesus, shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory.” –Philippians 4:19.
It seems very easy right?, yet letting God be your exclusive source of nourishment requires a great deal of spiritual work.
Obviously, as my father would say, you are questioning God’s willingness not necessarily His ability.
You think He “can,” but you’re not sure if He “will” meet your needs or grant your requests.
Furthermore, God never intended for you to place your faith solely in your labour; both work and faith are necessary.
James 2:17 states that faith alone is dead without works.
Additionally, He did not intend for you to use any other source—not the government, not your family, not your credit cards—as your source.
He is and always will be your primary source of supplies and all you require to prosper.
That implies that when you follow His instructions, He will always give you something to work for, anoint your skills, and bring THE BLESSING to the scene.
2. The Ownership of God
One more thing that believers should keep in mind , when it comes to financial wisdom is that everything belongs to God.
The cornerstone of sound financial wisdom is realising that everything belongs to God.
As your comprehension of this concept deepens, your concern for genuine wealth increases.
According to Psalm 24:1, “The earth and everything in it belong to the Lord.”
Understanding that you are only a steward of God’s resources causes you to rethink your attitudes toward material wealth.
It fosters humility, thankfulness, and a readiness to use resources for God’s glory.
In conclusion, since God is the owner of everything for believers, therefore God also owns believers.
“The way you treat what belongs to someone else and their ability to create wealth will impact your ability to receive
God’s supernatural intervention in your own efforts to generate wealth’- Kenneth Copeland
3. Stewardship and Budgeting
Without learning the art of stewardship, there is no way for you to advance in your financial wisdom.
One way to put stewardship into practice is to create and adhere to a budget.
As we are reminded in Proverbs 21:5, “The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.”
As a believer, you may occasionally find it challenging to handle your money because there seems to be constant push to spend.
The sense of stewardship gets you to the point, where you tone down on frivolities.
When you realise that everything you possess is not your own, the master gives you control of His affairs with the instruction to “occupy till I come.”
The knowledge that God has placed something in my hands has greatly aided me in developing financial wisdom.
He expects me to do business with it and bring returns, even if it’s not necessarily mine per se.
And if I have to bring returns, it affects how I spend because I know I have to account for how I spent it.
There is now a distinct distinction between being stingy and being wise financially; you have to draw that line.
A budget also aids in the efficient management of your earnings, expenses, and savings.
By allocating resources wisely, believers can honour God with their finances and avoid unnecessary debt.
4. Generosity and Giving
Another thing to remember when it comes to financial wisdom is that Christian living is characterised by generosity.
A few Christians are holding out for a miracle to happen. They want money to just magically appear in their laps.
However, wealth transfers that God has ordered are always tied to employment. Now, this doesn’t take away from the possibility that God can grant us financial miracles.
In actuality, in order for God’s hand to be drawn down, there has to be a sufficient quota of labour—whether it be spiritual or physical.
People often assume that God is a magician and say things like, “Oh God, give me this, and He does,” or “Give me that, and He does too.”
However, when you consciously grow in your walk with God,
God may demonstrate his love for you in certain situations not by giving you money, but rather by asking for your time.
As a believer, God is working to transform you into a reflection of the Jehovah Jireh aspect of Himself.
A place where you give everything you have and consider it a blessing from God that He has given you something in return.
Christians are encouraged to give joyfully in 2 Corinthians 9:7. “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give”
Giving selflessly honours God’s bounty toward you while also assisting the church’s mission and those in need.
By prioritising generosity, believers participate in God’s kingdom work and experience the joy of giving.
5. Saving and Investing

You can’t eat your seed and expect a harvest, that’s deception.
Usually, believers don’t know how much God is counting on them to use the finances He gave to them wisely.
If you can’t handle the unrighteous mammon like the scripture says in Luke 16:11, how will God commit to you true riches?
Proverbs 21:20 advises, “The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.”
Saving and investing is a worthwhile financial wisdom you need as a believer.
You want to start up something and you don’t have anything saved even if it is a penny.
Even Jesus, when He fed the five thousand asked for what they had available.
Do we talk about Elijah and the widow, she had a cruise of oil, that’s enough for God to multiply.
Sadly, sometimes as a believer you want God to multiply an empty hand, brain or pocket.
It is prudent financial management to save and invest for the future.
In several cases, no matter how tiny the amount seemed, I felt a strong pull in my spirit to invest in anything or save that money.
It seems odd to say that sometimes it was only 100 naira each day and other times it was 50 naira.
However, it was during this process that God taught me the art of financial stewardship, which included learning how to invest and save money.
Furthermore, Christians should approach saving and investing with discernment and caution, regardless of whether they are saving for future aspirations or crises.
Believers can support their families and themselves while also having resources to bless others by making plans for the future.
6. Be Content and Avoiding Materialism
1st Timothy 6:6 “ Godliness with contentment is great gain”
Since materialism is highly valued in our society, learning to be content is financial wisdom.
Contentment encourages financial responsibility, decreases the need for excessive purchasing, and builds gratitude.
Furthermore, you can only find contentment in and through Christ as a believer.
Because it is human nature to acquire things, Paul was able to say, “I’ve learned how to abase and how to abound.”
It is an enormous gain, just as the scripture states, to the point where everything else becomes subordinate to Christ.
If something is also considered in light of Christ, it gains significance for you; God requires happy Christians.
Finally, it is imperative for believers to seek God’s guidance when making financial decisions.
Proverbs 3:5–6 exhorts us to rely not on our own understanding but to put all of our faith in the Lord.
Whether choosing investments, careers, or large expenditures,
Alignment with God’s goals and priorities is ensured by seeking His knowledge through prayer and wise advice.
7. Every Business Needs Labor
“Every effort yields a reward.” – Proverbs 14:23.
As a believer, you also need to be aware of this financial wisdom.
Labour is not a sin; it is not toil. Nonetheless, you hear people lamenting over their job or how much they hate Mondays all the time.
I used to do the same thing—I would hiss, toss, and turn on my bed in the hopes that something would occur to spare me from going to work.
Since work was created by God, it must be a good concept! For this reason, the Bible states that he rested in Genesis 1.
Furthermore, God promises to bless the labour of your hands.
This implies that you should anticipate far more from your work than just a logical return.
As you are aware, Proverbs 14:23 discusses much more than just a natural increase when it states, “In all labour there is profit.”
According to him, anything you set your hands to will grow and succeed, and when you follow your conscience and behave honourably.
Finally, His favour on your labour will propel you ahead more quickly and far more than you could ever achieve on your own.
You will be given opportunities most people only dream of, granted a raise when you may not have earned it, and promoted when you least expect it.
Conclusion
A key component of Christian life is sound financial wisdom.
You will see more money come into the Kingdom the more Christians position themselves to be business owners and managers.
God’s ownership is one of the financial wisdom concepts that those who embrace it respect Him with their finances and get His rewards.
Lastly, let us endeavour to handle our funds in a way that honours God and furthers His purposes and kingdom as stewards of His resources.
May God give us the requisite wisdom needed to be financial stewards. IJN
