Christ in the marketplace. For a lot of believers out there, the idea of ministry evokes images of pulpits, worship services, or missionary journeys to far-off lands.
But that is not just where ministry stops, yes there are those specifically called for this
and they know because no man taketh this honour upon himself, it is the Lord that bestows it.
In the same vein, the marketplace is a ripe platform for ministry.
Because it is one of the most significant mission fields, most of us spend nearly a third of our lives—the workplace.
Whether we clock in at a corporate office, manage a business, teach in a classroom, or drive a cab, our work is not separate from our witness.
That’s why, in today’s world the marketplace is often a melting pot of cultures, beliefs, and moral frameworks.
Faith is increasingly relegated to the private sphere, and the pressure to blend in rather than stand for God can feel overwhelming.
Therefore, many believers struggle with questions like:
- How can I honor Christ without alienating my colleagues?
- Where is the line between professionalism and compromise?
- Is it possible to be excellent at my job and bold in my faith?
The Bible is clear: wherever God has placed us, we are called to be salt and light (Matthew 5:13–16).
Consequently, our workplace is not a distraction from our calling
It is a platform for living out our faith with authenticity, courage, and compassion.
See your job as a God-given platform because that’s how you will navigate challenges without compromising your convictions
That’s how we would share the hope of Christ naturally and effectively and also honor God through excellence and integrity.
Your Work Matters to God; Christ in the marketplace

It is very obvious that many times as Christians we compartmentalize our life into “sacred” and “secular.”
The same way that Bible study, and prayer is seen as spiritual, work must also be seen as spiritual not a means to an end.
That’s why scripture teaches that all of life—including work—is an opportunity to glorify God.
Because, this is what will transform our perspective:
- Work becomes worship. Every email, project, or meeting can be offered to God.
- Excellence becomes a testimony. When you do your work with diligence, people take notice.
- Integrity becomes your platform. A consistent life earns the right to be heard.
God placed Joseph in Pharaoh’s court, Daniel in Babylon, and Esther in a pagan palace.
They didn’t blend in. They stood out. Their faithfulness in their professional roles opened doors to influence entire nations.
Navigating Pressure Without Compromise; Christ in the Marketplace
I’ve realised that today’s workplaces can feel like modern-day Babylon, especially a workplace whose culture and foundation is not Christ.
Policies, conversations, and expectations often contradict biblical values and yet sometimes these contradictions are from us as believers.
Compromise is subtle and gradual—often disguised as “professionalism,” “tolerance,” or “just going along to get along.”
That’s why sometimes saying we won’t compromise is not enough, so we prepare in case we find ourselves there
Evidently, the scriptures in Daniel 1:8 says “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself…”
Meaning that before the test came, Daniel had already resolved where he stood.
That’s why being in the market place as believers, we decide our convictions ahead of time.
If we wait until pressure mounts to decide where we stand, we will most likely cave.
So with intense prayers, we determine:
- What lines we will not cross
- What practices we will not participate in
- What standards we will uphold even if the only one standing
We don’t have to be combative to do that unless necessary but a calm, and firm “I’m not comfortable participating in that” often commands respect.
We also have to learn to trust God with the outcome.
Like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, we may face consequences for the stand we took which honors God.
But then, it works in us a far more weight of eternal glory.
And we can never ever forget to sincerely pray for wisdom, not the one books gives
But the one from above, from the Father of Light.
This is what helps us to discern when to speak up and when to stay silent.
Excellence as Evangelism
“In everything, set them an example by doing what is good…” (Titus 2:7)
When you:
- Show up on time
- Deliver exceptional work
- Refuse to gossip
- Treat everyone with respect
…you reflect Christ in a way that words alone cannot.
Joseph’s story (Genesis 39–41) demonstrates that God’s favor rests on those who serve diligently:
Sometimes, even unbelievers recognize the difference:
- Potiphar entrusted Joseph with his entire household.
- Pharaoh promoted Joseph to the second-highest position in Egypt.
That’s why, our credibility as believers is not inseparable from our character and work ethic.
Simple Ways to Witness in the marketplace

Christ in the Marketplace. Be very open about your faith, let people know you’re a born-again Christian with excellence.
We can also share what God is teaching us when appropriate. Offer to pray for colleagues if need be.
Serve generously, we can bring coffee or give the team a treat sometimes and celebrate others’ wins and be sincere about it.
If we are not sincere, even if we celebrate it, our spirit is already giving off a negative energy and we will most likely not participate in that which we just celebrated.
We can’t also forget to live with consistency. Nothing discredits our witness faster than hypocrisy.
We only plant the seeds. God gives the increase.
Sometimes, living boldly for Christ will bring favor—promotions, respect, opportunities.
Other times, it may cost us. Jesus never promised that following Him would be easy:
“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.” (John 15:18)
But He also promised this:
“Blessed are you when people revile you, persecute you… Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven.” (Matthew 5:11–12)
When we stand firm:
- God sees.
- God honors.
- God rewards.
Our responsibility is obedience. The outcome is His.
Thriving as a Christian professional; Living out faith in the office
- Pray daily for your workplace, which is very necessary!
- Arrive early and be prepared, cannot be overemphasized
- Avoid gossip or negativity, there is nothing that tears down a workplace like this.
- Respect authority even when you disagree. Authority is authority and like my Father Apostle Edu would say, there is something bigger than right or wrong. If the matter bothers you as much as you think, make it a point of intercession not gossip.
- Give credit generously and take blame humbly. Once we shift blame things will crumble.
- Maintain boundaries without apology. Is your body gold? I’ve heard some people say..brother yes! Your body is gold, sister, yes! Your body is gold!
- Be transparent about your faith in natural conversation.
- Keep your word—always.
